Digital Combat Simulations have released the 1.5 update in the form of an open beta and it looks beautiful. DCS has pretty much always looked good to me but this has taken it up to another level. The screenshots below just don’t do it any justice. I wasn’t even aware that such an update was on the horizon but these days I’m not that well informed. I took the A-10C up for a spin on a simulated late afternoon range session. Firing a couple of mavericks at armor followed up by some HE rockets. If you haven’t got  it you can get it for free. You get a couple of aircraft to fly and it’s a great introduction to this fantastic sim.

Dumb Bombs Dumb Pilot

 A DCS A-10c AAR.

A good old-fashioned gun run followed by an iron bomb drop on tanks with a low altitude approach in a mountainous area. How I have missed virtual flying. This always happens, I play the hell out of a simulation and move off to do other things and then after a month or two I’m back in the cockpit. I haven’t flown DCS A-10C since 2 updates back.

This mission calls for me to search for and destroy enemy seen by recce  special forces team located in an observation hide in a hilly area to the south. I decide a low-level approach is called for here to minimise my exposure to any SAMs that have been spotted on the approach routes.

A-10 1

I am about 10 miles out from the target area. Time to get eyes on using the great targeting pod. Scanning  for a minute or so I find a possible grouping but I can’t make out what type. It is armour but we have friendlies in the area. I need to get close so I drop altitude and get into the weeds for a better approach.

Easy CBU-97 tutorial.

As promised I made a very quick and easy CBU-97 tutorial for the DCS A10. No cuts it’s all live so you can see the mistakes I make. Nothing to technical but a quick handy reminder and guide to get you going. Next time I’m going to make a more in depth version with the intention of showing how you can use the on board computer to allow for wind correction.

A-10 DCS Home Pit

Getting back into the DCS series of simulations. This is my humble set-up for the A-10. It includes.

  1. iControl DCS (iPad App)
  2. Cougar MFDs
  3. Warthog HOTAS
  4. TrackIR
  5. Momo steering wheel pedals as the rudder pedals.

It all works really well and it doesn’t actually take a lot to set it all up.
