Steel Armor Blaze Of War

Written by Phil on . Posted in Battle, Graviteam Tactics Operation Star

This week I was doing my yearly clear up of my hard drive etc (yearly!!! I know) Steel Armor has been sitting on my desktop for ages………well over a year. I decided to give it one more go before I deleted it. Boy oh Boy!! am I glad I didn’t. I found a great little tutorial going over the basics and this opened it all up for me. Made by the same guys who made Graviteam Tactics Operation Star.  Great little tank sim that has ( I am guilty too ) been overlooked by most sim fans of this genre.

I made a small basic intro to it all in this Video.

Operation Star Tutorial Part 1

I made this basic introduction to Graviteam Tactics Operation Star for Ranger and anyone else who wants to get started in this great game. It’s a bit rushed because I did it while the wife and kids were out shopping and that’s the only time to get any peace and quiet. This is part one where I go through Quick Battle and Artillery deployment. In the second part I will start a campaign and go through some elements of that.

My voice gets drowned out in some small parts where the battle noise takes over. I will sort that out in part 2.

Return To Graviteam Tactics Operation Star

When I first got this game the user interface to me was appalling and I nearly gave up with it but in every forum where I was looking for hints and tips etc I found lots of comments which suggested this really is a great game and worth trying. It is great and I would say it’s right up there with the likes of Combat Missions if not better. There is so much depth here when you go digging around. The scale is fantastic without being overwhelming. The planning phases are a pleasure. The first phase is a large operational map and here you are in a sort of turn based setting moving large forces around. Then when a battle starts where you or the enemy can instigate at any time you go into a deployment phase where you have views of the battlefield, maps and your units to come up with a plan depending on the tactical situation. Then from there you move into an initial orders phase. This is a good time to start setting up prearranged artillery points with your spotters. Then its into the RTS mode where you can dictate the pace.

I have just completed a battle which gave me the opportunity to test out the games artillery and all its functions. It was stunning to see the barrage go in on some well dug-in Russian infantry the effect was great. Then have my infantry go in and attack supported by some armor. The overall feeling of a large-scale but manageable battle had me grinning from ear to ear.

Achtung Panzer Operation Star and Update.

I am really enjoying Gettysburg at the moment. The designers keep adding small patches based on customer feedback and bug reporting. These come in on quite a regular basis which is always a good sign. I have found that i can slow the pace down just by backing off from the battle and taking more time to consider moves (probably a good idea in a lot of cases anyway). This also has the advantage of increasing assets such as morale etc. It’s far from an in-depth tactical and strategic complex simulation but i am still getting a lot of fun out of it.

I have also just purchased Achtung Panzer Operation Star after Steam reduced its price by 75%. I have had my eye on this for a while now and it has been sitting in my wish list for a good few months. I wasn’t willing to pay £30 for the title after buying Blaze of War from the same developers which simply doesn’t work on my pc. Although i did get to play it for a short period of time i could see something good in there as long as you worked out the complex system of controls.

I have had a go at Operation Star after trawling through some very helpful tutorials and reading through some forums. This is going to be great. The user interface is frustrating but like everything after you put a bit of effort in you get the rewards.
